Child abuse and neglect in the United States
Each year the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services publishes national data on child abuse and neglect reported to state child protective services.
What the source says
- In federal fiscal year 2023, states reported 546,159 victims of child abuse and neglect, a rate of 7.4 per 1,000 children.
- An estimated 2,000 children died from abuse and neglect in fiscal year 2023.
Our view
Mothers and fathers both report abuse. Whichever parent you are, reporting abuse should never be turned against you, and no parent should be labeled “alienating” for trying to protect a child.
