New York bills on child safety in custody cases
Bills introduced in the New York State Legislature in 2025 address child safety in custody decisions and domestic violence training for judges.
What the source says
- S5998 would require courts making custody decisions to prioritize child safety, and would create a rebuttable presumption against unsupervised custody or visitation for a party posing substantial risk to the child.
- S492 / A7952 would require family court judges and others to attend domestic violence training.

Our view
Mothers and fathers both report abuse. Whichever parent you are, reporting abuse should never be turned against you, and no parent should be labeled “alienating” for trying to protect a child.
